Podiatrists use various diagnostic tools to help them assess and treat your foot-related issues. They will do a physical examination and may order laboratory tests and imaging studies, such as X-rays or MRIs, to understand the full extent of your foot and ankle problems.

The frequency at which you see a podiatrist will depend on your specific need, but generally an annual check-up is recommended. More frequent foot check-ups with a podiatrist can be especially important if you have diabetes or other medical conditions that impact foot health.

You should call a podiatrist if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms related to your foot health: persistent pain, changes in skin or nail health, foot deformities (i.e., bunions, hammertoes, etc.), difficulty standing or walking, foot numbness or tingling sensation, if you have diabetes with any sign of cuts, sores, or infections, ingrown toenails, corns, sports-related injuries, and foot swelling or redness.
